Jesus' Sermon on the Mount contains nine "blesseds" that might easily be translated "Joyous."  Blessed is closer to happy, when in fact the word refers to the ultimate well-being and distinctive spiritual joy.


Spiritual Joy

JOYOUS are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

JOYOUS are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.

JOYOUS are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.

JOYOUS are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness,
for they will be filled.

JOYOUS are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

JOYOUS are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.

JOYOUS are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.

JOYOUS are those who are persecuted
because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
